Public Affairs Officer
 

The Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires is seeking a fully bilingual (English and Spanish) Public Affairs Officer for a locally engaged staff (LES) vacancy. The position requires experience in public and/or media relations including events management. Experience administering a grants program or working with civil society would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will coordinate the public diplomacy program at the Embassy, which aims to promote a positive image of Australia. The successful candidate will also coordinate the Embassy’s aid program, including publicising the schemes, receiving and collating submissions, coordinating recommendations and liaising with non-government organisations (NGOs) on their final reports. The successful candidate will have highly polished communication, interpersonal and organisational skills and be flexible and willing to take on new tasks.

This is a locally engaged position which means that applicants must demonstrate they are able to work legally in Argentina. The successful applicant typically would be a resident of Argentina. The Embassy cannot assist with visas or work permits.

Gross monthly salary: ARS 20,903.00 (salary level will be adjusted as of 1 July 2015)

Duty Statement
  1. Coordinate public affairs and cultural activities on behalf of the Embassy to promote the image of Australia, including supporting visits.
  2. Develop and maintain media contacts in the context of the annual public diplomacy strategy and keep those contacts informed of developments in Australia and of Embassy activities and visits.
  3. Update post’s website and Facebook in liaison with Second/Third Secretary and Public Diplomacy Branch. Assist with content for the Ambassador’s Twitter account. Maintain social media records on published content and statistics.
  4. Coordinate the post's Direct Aid Program (DAP) and other development cooperation programs, including publicising the schemes, coordinating recommendations, liaison with NGOs and reporting processes.
  5. Assist in the preparation of Ambassador’s speeches and briefings for media interviews.
  6. Monitor and keep a record of media references to Australia and provide reports to the Ambassador and Australia-based officers as appropriate.
  7. Maintain CD, DVD, video and library collection within the Embassy.
  8. Act as back-up Ambassador’s Personal Assistant and Receptionist as required.
  9. Other duties as required.
Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated high level experience in public and/or media relations.

  • University degree in public relations or equivalent
  • Events management experience
  • Established press contacts an advantage
  • Experience managing social media for a company or organisation an advantage.

2. Experience and/or qualifications in development cooperation and program management would be an advantage.

3. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and service-oriented approach, including in developing relationships with the media, cultural and civil society contacts, Embassy colleagues and the general public. Capacity to manage sensitive information. Ability to work with limited direction, manage multiple tasks and initiate and set priorities, and undertake new tasks quickly.

4. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in both English and Spanish.
